What are your Hours of Operation?
We are currently open 11am to 8pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 2pm to 5pm on Sunday. We are closed on Mondays. During the Farmer's Markets on Saturdays through the summer, we open from 10am to 8pm.
Are your cakes baked fresh?
We believe in fresh, moist cakes! Our cakes are custom designed and baked for every order. We bake fresh every week, so your cake will be moist and delicious for your celebration.
What kind of icing do you use?
We offer buttercream using our own homemade recipe. It has a light, fluffy texture and is not overly sweet. We do not offer whipped topping on our cakes, unless it is a sugar-free cake (choose from chocolate or vanilla).
What is your pricing on birthday cakes and occasional cakes?

What is the pricing of sculpted cakes (3-dimensional cakes)?
Our sculpted cakes start at at $130.
What is fondant? I heard it tastes terrible!
Fondant is a sugar dough that creates an elegant and flawlessly smooth surface. Most people are either unfamiliar with fondant or have only tasted a certain kind. We encourage you to taste our fondant first; it is delicious! It melts in your mouth and has a texture similar to marshmallow. We do, however, have options without fondant.
If you bring us a picture of a cake done in fondant but want it in buttercream, please keep in mind it will not look the same! The only way to achieve a flawless finish is with fondant, and there are certain designs that we will not duplicate in buttercream.
Do you offer gluten-free cakes?
We bake either vanilla or chocolate flourless cakes (made with rice flour), but we do not guarantee that the cakes are gluten-free due to the risk of gluten in the air. If there is a severe allergy, we do not recommend placing an order with Capital City Cakes.
How do I order a cake?
We take cake orders over the phone (614-27-SWEET) or in our shop, located at 4009 Broadway in Grove City. We have a trained sales staff that will be happy to assist you with your order. We do not take cake orders online or through email.
We require 3-5 days' notice and payment up front on all custom cakes. We accept cash, local checks or Visa, MasterCard and Discover.
What is the best day to order a custom cake?
If you are looking to spend time designing the cake with a salesperson, Mondays through Thursdays are the best days to stop in. If upon arrival it is determined that your cake requires more customization, an appointment will be scheduled with one of our designers. We can also help with estimates via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
How far in advance should I order my cake?
Because of the time and complexity of our cakes, we require a minimum 3 to 5 day notice on all custom designs. We are a small cake shop that can only take so many custom orders, so we often book up for weeks in advance.
We do have ready-made cakes in our case, should you need one immediately, as these are first come, first serve! Please stop in anytime, or give us a call and we can place one on hold after payment.
What is your refund/deposit policy?
Terms and Conditions of Sale: Payment in full is required to place an order to reserve your date and product. If the order is cancelled, Capital City Cakes will retain 50% of the payment. However, the order may be postponed until a later date if unforeseen circumstances happen.

We require a 50% non-refundable deposit for all orders and this is due a minimum of one week prior to the date of the party or at the time of ordering.
Due to being a small shop, we can only take so many orders per weekend. If an order is cancelled, your deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable. If a party date changes due to illness/emergency/etc. - we may be able to transfer your entire order to a future date without the loss of your deposit (48hrs notice or more is ideal).
Refunds / Exchanges
Due to the tedious, handcrafted nature of our products, we are unable to provide refunds or exchanges for custom orders
Once you or a designated party has picked up an order and signed for it, it is considered "accepted" – we will ask to make sure that everything is correct such as the design, spelling, etc. Refunds requested due to decorating style, writing, color shade, or general design will not be honored after signing for your cake. In some instances you may bring the cake back in for design adjustments but this is an additional charge if the cake has been signed for
All products are the responsibility of the customer once it leaves our shop. We are not responsible for any damage occurring to the cake during transport, set-up or any time thereafter. You will be given instructions on how to carry, transport, and store your cake upon pick up. Keep in mind that cakes are very fragile and damages can happen if not handled properly – such as cracks, smudges, melted frosting, etc. We only give refunds in accordance with refund policies stated below.
Cake flavor and texture is subjective. Full refunds requested due to flavor or texture after the cake has been accepted and picked up will not be honored. You may qualify for a percentage of a store credit if the product is brought back and the quality of the cake flavor or texture is determined to not meet our standards. Cakes must be brought back to us within a timely manner, preferably with 24 hours of pick up - please call or email us promptly to let us know of the issue. Quality determination is solely at the discretion of Capital City Cakes. Please understand that we cannot issue refunds for cakes that have already been completely eaten. *Store credit percents are based on how quickly the cake is returned, how much has been consumed, and what we determine the quality to be. Store credits of any kind will not be issued to customers who do not contact us within 48 hours.
The following scenario is the only instance when we will provide a refund:
If you come to our store for pick up or if upon delivery the cake does not meet your expectations, we will give you a refund (minus 25% handling/cancellation fee). This refund will be given as a store credit (no cash/money refunds will be given) NOTE: If we give you a refund, you CANNOT keep the cake. You can only get the refund if you refuse to “accept” the cake. We will NOT negotiate a partial refund if you keep the cake. This is a “take it, or leave it” policy. We are not responsible for any expense you may incur for replacing our cake.
***We do not give refunds under any other circumstances. Refunds are only given within 7 days.
Cancellation / Changes
Changes and cancellations to retail orders are accepted until 96 hours (4 days) prior to scheduled pick up time. No refunds will be provided for any payments made on the order no matter the amount - if canceled at least 96 hours in advance we will be happy to transfer any payment made on that order to another order within 3 months from that date. We will provide no other refunds regardless of the circumstances. 3D Cakes require at least one week's notice if changes want to be made to the cake, to change the date, or to cancel. You will be required to pay the full amount if the order is cancelled with less notice. This does not apply to orders that have contracts.
Guarantee / Disclaimer
We do all that we can to make sure that your order is decorated to the specification on your written order form. Upon pick-up of your cake, adjustments can be made for an additional charge if it was not stated on your original order. If for some reason something is not decorated correctly as stated on your order, we will make necessary changes right away.
Every order is hand-made. Decorative finishes are done by hand and are subject to the artistic interpretation of our expert cake decorators. You may provide us with a photograph for inspiration and duplication; however, we make no claims for exact duplication of the work done by other cake decorators.
All orders are subject to these policies listed above.
I forgot to order a birthday cake. What should I do?
You can always call the shop to see if we have availability on short notice, or you can stop in and purchase our ready-made cakes from our display cooler. We usually have a selection of 6" cakes that serve 4-6, or 8" cakes that feed 10-15 every day. These cakes are first come, first serve and we can hold a cake for you over the phone if you pay in full with a credit card.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE PROPER VEHICLE TO TRANSPORT YOUR CAKE ORDER!
The cake needs to sit flat in the trunk of a car or SUV, and Capital City Cakes is not responsible for any damage done to a cake during transport during improper loading of a cake into your car. Cakes need to sit level, not on a seat. We recommend clearing out the trunk of your car before pick-up, and we will be happy to load your cake into your car for you.
Do you offer consultations?
We always recommend setting up a consultation with one of our designers. We are available on Sundays from 1:30pm to 4:30pm. Consultations last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. We recommend having some ideas in mind when you book your appointment to save time. Please call (614) 27-SWEET to set up an appointment.
What can I expect at my consultation?
During your consultation, we will discuss how many servings you need, flavor options, event details, design ideas and budget. We want your cake to reflect your personality, and together we'll create a unique design just for you! You will also taste 3 samples of our delicious cakes with flavors of your choice.
What should I bring with me?
We recommend that you bring inspirational pieces to assist in making your vision a reality. Helpful items include color swatches, event invitation, list of ideas, Pinterest boards, cake topper or cake jewelry.
Not ready for an official consultation?
Feel free to visit our shop during our retail hours to view our extensive portfolios and gallery cakes on display. A salesperson will be on duty to answer any questions you might have.
How far in advance should I order my cake?
Please order cakes for summer months as soon as possible!
We accept a limited number of cakes each weekend so that we can guarantee individual attention to each wedding. Most brides book at least 6 months prior to their wedding, while some book as far as a year out! Please give us a call as soon as you can to see if your date is available!
How much is required for a deposit?
All we require to book your date and product is a NON-REFUNDABLE $100 deposit. We know you're spending a lot of money up front, so as long as your balance is paid two weeks prior to your event date, you can make payments once you have placed your deposit. The $100 deposit is credited toward your cake balance.
Can we get more than one flavor of cake, or does the whole cake have to be the same flavor?
You can mix and match any flavors on our menu! Every tier can be a different flavor if you would like!
Can we get a styrofoam cake and sheet cakes to save money?
We do offer styrofoam cakes, but the time and artistic technique required to decorate it is the same for styrofoam as it is for real cake, so the cost is the same. Sheet cakes are available with a minimum purchase of $400.
What type of flowers do you provide?
A bride will typically work with her florist to provide fresh flowers, and we will arrange the stems at no additional charge to you. You may also provide silk flowers. We do offer a gumpaste flower option for an additional charge, which is a hardened sugar. It is edible, but most brides opt to keep them as mementos, since they last forever!
Do you have cake stands available?
We have a variety of cake and cupcake stands available for rent. The cost ranges from a $50 to $100 deposit depending on the size of the stand, with 50% of your deposit returned to you when the stand is brought back clean and in good condition.
Do you make groom's cakes?
Groom's cakes are one of our specialties! We do a variety of simple, gourmet cakes, or we can do something completely custom to reflect your groom's personality! You can take a look at some of our designs in our galleries, or we can customize a cake for you at your convenience!
Do you deliver the cake?
We deliver within Grove City for $25, or downtown Columbus for $50. Destinations beyond that are based on mileage.
Should I save the top tier of my cake for my 1-year Anniversary?
You certainly can, but that is a tradition that may be going by the wayside! As our gift to you, we offer a FREE 6" freshly-baked cake for your First Anniversary, because we know a cake that's frozen for a year just won't taste as great as a fresh one will! All we ask is that you send us some photos of you and your groom with your cake, and leave us some feedback to let us know how we did!
